Mali army to share power

The Guardian, 30 March 1991

Mali’s new military leaders last night agreed to share power with civilian groups following their coup on Tuesday, although they will not return to barracks until next year, writes Mark Huband in Bamako.

After a three-hour meeting, the country’s military leader, Lieutenant-Colonel Amadou Toumani Touré, and representatives of the pro-democracy movement established a joint transitional administration which will see the country through to a national conference to be held by June 30. It comprises 15 civilian and 10 military members.
